  • How many versions of the Ten Commandments are there?

Don't you think that, if there was one fundamental doctrine upon which the "Christian" world could agree, it would be the Ten Commandments? I mean, how much more basic can you get? And, yet, there are three versions of which I am aware:
            Catholic
            Lutheran
            And one more . . .

Do you know the differences between the three? Could there be others? How do you suppose this happened? Surely, Yah only has one version. Which one do you prefer?

Thank you for inviting me to join your forum.

I am aware that there are different versions of the Ten Commandments (Ten Words), but personally, my main focus is in the Hebrew Scriptures version at Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

      Sandy,

I think that everyone who teaches that YAH gave Moses Ten Commandments claim the Hebrew Scriptures as their source.

The Catholics seem to have used Deuteronomy 5:

      Hebrew ScripturesCatholic Commandments

[Deut 5: 6 KJV] I am YAH thy Elohim, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. [7] Thou shalt have no other Elohim before me. [8] Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: [9] Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I YAH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. [10] And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

      1. Thou shalt have no other Elohim before me.

[11] Thou shalt not take the name of YAH thy Elohim in vain: for YAH will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

      2. Thou shalt not take the name of YAH, thy Elohim, in vain.

[12] Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as YAH thy Elohim hath commanded thee. [13] Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: [14] But the seventh day is the sabbath of YAH thy Elohim: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. [15] And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that YAH thy Elohim brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore YAH thy Elohim commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

      3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

[16] Honour thy father and thy mother, as YAH thy Elohim hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which YAH thy Elohim giveth thee.

      4. Thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

      [17] Thou shalt not kill.

      5. Thou shalt not kill.

[18] Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

      6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

      [19] Neither shalt thou steal.

      7. Thou shalt not steal.

[20] Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

      8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

[21] Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife,

      9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.

neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

      10. Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbor's.

And the Lutherans must have used Exodus 20:

      Hebrew ScripturesLutheran Commandments

[Exo 20: 2 KJV] I am YAH thy Elohim, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. [3] Thou shalt have no other Elohim before me. [4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: [5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YAH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; [6] And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

      1. Thou shalt have no other Elohim before Me.

[7] Thou shalt not take the name of YAH thy Elohim in vain; for YAH will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

      2. Thou shalt not take the name of YAH, thy Elohim, in vain.

[8] Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. [9] Six days shalt thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: [10] But the seventh day is the sabbath of YAH thy Elohim: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; [11] For in six days YAH made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore YAH blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

      3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Thou shalt sanctify the holy day.)

[12] Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which YAH thy Elohim giveth thee.

      4. Thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

      [13] Thou shalt not kill.

      5. Thou shalt not kill.

[14] Thou shalt not commit adultery.

      6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

      [15] Thou shalt not steal.

      7. Thou shalt not steal.

[16] Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

      8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

[17] Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house,

      9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.

thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

      10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

[Deu 4:13 KJV] And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Moses came down from Mount Sinai with one set of Ten Commandments. Both of the versions above have the appearance of following the Hebrew Scriptures. Can you see the "sleight of hand" used by the Catholics and Lutherans? Do you know their motivation?

        Shalom Hyssop,

May Yah be with you brother.

I caught the "slight of hand"... but as to why??
        I know not.
Looking forward to more word from you brother.

          Greetings Hyssop
I am not sure if I know what you mean by slight of hand. I do note that they offer a condensed version, which leaves out important information, such as: "the seventh day is the sabbath".

You have given us an excellent example, but I wish to comment on one thing in the Catholic and Luthern section. You have correctly used Elohim and his name, but they do not. They use LORD and GOD.

            Aids To Worship!

            Hi Everyone,

Thought that I should perhaps refresh the look of this forum.

Both Catholics and Lutherans like to use aids to worship in their ritualistic approach to life completely contrary to what the Fountain of Life has commanded. So, let's just ignore the commandment. I mean who pays attention to what YAHWEH has actually said? Surely, one billion Catholics can't all be wrong!
            Exod 20:4-5
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:.... (KJV)
I wonder if YAHWEH is serious about HIS LAW?

            Sincerely, Ab
