Survivor,
I’m posting this study to help you compare notes. I am not sure how you hurt, but I thought to take a look at what we have available in the Scriptures on the subject of sex stuff, molestation, abuse and so on. There is always comfort in the Scriptures.
Studying the subject of sexuality in the Bible one discovers that of all the writers of the NT only Saint Paul must have had a personal vendetta against the gays and the lesbians. Saint Peter is not like that. He puts a good word for Lot in spite of Lot’s lifestyle. Even Jesus Christ has a surprisingly good word for the Sodomites. Saint Paul goes beyond the Torah and damns not only the gays but the Lesbians, too. There is no Lesbian damnation whatsoever in the Hebrew Scriptures. Only the homosexuals are affected. The present study is offered to appraise Biblical sex issues. We use the record in the Hebrew Scriptures for encouragement and hope.
Romans 15:4 (NIV) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Let’s take a look at the story of Lot and his family in Sodom. The messengers who came to visit Lot didn’t want to have sex with the men of Sodom. Lot was a man of peace and wanted to get along with everybody in Sodom. We can only guess how Lot himself managed to mingle with the people of Sodom when he moved there. He must have been greeted by the same welcome party, and seems to have survived the formality. Anyway, Lot offered the Sodomites his own virgin daughters in lieu of the messengers that came to visit him. He didn’t hesitate one bit to do so. He even gave them permission to perform any kind of sex act on his daughters. He did all this in spite of the fact that his daughters were already pledged (i.e. engaged) in marriage to some Sodomite men. "Pledged" means that the girls were still awfully young for sexual acts. His Sodomite “sons in law” didn’t seem to mind the intention of releasing their brides to the Sodomites, either. It was all said and done so naturally.
Lot must have done the right thing because Saint Peter says that Lot was a righteous (i.e. law abiding) man even though Moses’ Law was not yet given. They all must have had a common law. The law that Lot obeyed allowed him to turn over his virgin daughters to his neighbors for whatever sexual pleasure they had in mind. The messengers that came to visit Lot did not object to anything that Lot was saying and doing. After the departure from Sodom Lot’s wife looks back and gets zapped into a phallic salt pillar. Later on his 2 daughters had a few wine parties with daddy Lot and he gets them pregnant one by one. This must have been a common occurrence in those days because it is reported very casually. Lot was a righteous man and broke no law. There was no incest law in effect at that time otherwise the family of Adam and Eve would be out of business soon.
Genesis 19:5-8 * They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof."
Genesis 19:14 * So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, "Hurry and get out of this place, because Yahweh is about to destroy the city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
Genesis 19:31-36 * One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father." That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father." So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.
2 Peter 2:7 (NIV) and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men.
Obviously, at that time it was customary and perfectly normal and even expected for any stranger visiting another city to sexually socialize with the locals. The story is repeated several times in the Hebrew Scriptures before and after the Law of Moses. After the Law of Moses was given, sexual permissiveness took a kinkier turn. We have the case of a Levite priest travelling with his concubine (i.e. wife). When they were visiting Gibeah the locals expected to have sexual relations with him. For some strange reason his wife didn’t turn them on. They were knocking at the door of the house where they were enjoying themselves with the host family. The men of the city wanted to have sex only with the priest. He declined the request and the host proposed to his neighbors to respect his guest’s wish. He didn’t hesitate to give them permission to go ahead and abuse his own virgin daughter in any humiliating sex act that they could perform on her. The host also told them to get the priest’s wife, too. It was then that the priest took his wife and gave her away to the men of the city. The man of the city gang raped her all night.
The next day the priest recovered his exhausted wife and they returned home. Then he grabs a knife and slashes her body in 12 pieces. He sends a piece of her body to each one of the 12 tribes of Israel. Then the priest lied to everybody about the whole event and gets hundreds of thousands of Israelites at war with each other. The incredible carnage is beyond the scope of this study to report. Because of what the priest did and said all the women of Benjamin were killed. Still the story has a happy ending with a dance party where boy-grabs-girl and they elope to live happily ever after or so.
Judges 19:22-25 * While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him." The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing. Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing." But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.
Judges 19:29 * When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.
Judges 20:4-5 * So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, "I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night. During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died. (i.e. what a lie!)
Judges 21:23 * So that is what the Benjamites did. While the girls were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.
This matter of giving one’s wife or virgin daughter for the sexual satisfaction of another person or persons was a very commonly expected event in those days. Job is one of the finest men in the Faith Hall of Fame. He was willing to make her wife a sexual slave object of other men if he ever was caught with another woman. That must have given Mrs. Job a lot of food for thought. Almighty Yahweh is known to deliver one’s wives to strange men for sexual enjoyment in a public X-rated show if we are bad. I am wondering if some sensually oriented wives wouldn’t be looking forward to a punishment like that. I also wonder how many X-rated shows today are in effect punishments from God, too. Stop to think about it, without anyone watching the X-rated shows there would be no punishment. Almighty Yahweh took the wives of King Saul and gave them to King David. Then he takes the wives of King David and gives them to someone else. We all love to think that the wife we married is a present from the Almighty. I see nothing wrong in a wife switching husbands. Almighty Yahweh does that wholesale all the time!
Job 31:9-10 * "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor's door, then may my wife grind another man's grain, and may other men sleep with her.
Jeremiah 8:10a * Therefore I will give their wives to other men.
2 Samuel 12:7-8 * Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what Yahweh, the Elohim of Israel, says: `I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.
2 Samuel 12:11 * "This is what Yahweh says: `Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.
