The Lake of Fire
The passages in Revelation which speak of the lake of fire should be a warning to any unthinking people who say that we have no reason to serve God now if we are all going to be saved eventually.
Such people show that they are serving God out of fear of punishment and not out of love and devotion to Him.
Those who truly love God do not serve Him out of fear, but out of love.
This lake is described as “the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
Fire is really heat and light.
Brimstone, which is sulphur, was sacred to the deity among the ancient Greeks and was used to purify and consecrate to the deity.
To anyone trained in Greek, a “ lake of fire and brimstone” would mean a lake of divine purification.
Such a judgment does not save anyone, but it is used by God to change attitude and will and to consume rebellion.
The basic purpose of this divine fire is to rid His lost people of evil.
Only as the Spirit of God works on the proud carnal mind can a person be brought to broken-hearted repentance.
The Second Death
There is a definition of the second death in
Death itself is cast into the lake of fire.
Hades (hell), the realm of the dead, is cast into the lake of fire.
And those whose names are not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, those who are dead in sins…are cast into the lake of fire.
That is the end of death and hell and sin.
It is clear that God does not destroy people in the lake of fire.
That would be a contradiction of terms.
How can you destroy death by bringing people under the power of eternal death?
It is not people who are destroyed in this fire.
It is sin, death, and hell that are destroyed.
The lake of fire is nothing more nor less than the death of death.
meaning
The offense of the first Adam brought all men under the sentence of death for sin.
Most mortal bodies are in a state of dying, while their minds need to be freed from…the things of the flesh to minding the things of the Spirit.
The act of disobedience of Adam brought forth death.
Now the obedience and work of righteousness of the last Adam [Christ] also brings forth a death for every man.
[But this time it is the death of sin,]
this is the true understanding of the ''lake of fire and the 2nd death'' and nothing to do with man made up myths of eternal punishments and eternal tormenting.
FEAR loses.
