  • Methuselah

Genesis 5:25 tells us that Methuselah lived 969 years and he died.

    How did Methuselah die?

Did he die in the flood? Or is there evidence that he was still alive until shortly after the flood?

It is a matter of simple mathematics. To assist understanding lets call Methusaleh's birth year M (for Methusaleh)-0 (Zero). The year of his death, M-969. Lamech was born in M-187 (vs. 25) Noah was born 182 years later (Vs. 28), M-369. His first son was born 500 years later M-869. The earliest Noah's youngest son could have been born was M-871. After that YHWH said He would permit mankind to live only 120 more years (Gen. 6:3). The flood occurred no earlier than (871+120) M-989, twenty (20) years after Methusaleh died. If, Noah was exactly 600 years old (Gen 7:6), and not 620, then the flood occurred in M-969 (369(birth)+600), the same year that Methusaleh died.

So no Methusaleh did not die in the flood and there is no evidence that he was alive until shortly after the flood.

Gen 5:25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:
26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:
27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.
28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:
29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.
30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:
31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

7:6 And Noah was six hundred years old (M-969) when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

To really see this clearly plot it on a spread sheet, Excel, etc. BTW, this is what I mean when I say study, rather than picking out a piece of a verse here and another piece somewhere else.
